Everything follows Mike, a foster carer, as he and his family reflect on their experiences fostering two children, Will and Zara, who are now adults. The film opens with Mike’s surprise 60th birthday party, where Will and Zara express their deep gratitude, sharing how foster care shaped their lives.

Through flashbacks to the 1990s, we see young Will first finding his place in Mike’s family. Later, in the 2010s, we witness Mike teaching Zara how to play the guitar, leading to a touching moment when she performs at his party. Mike’s son, Chris, also reflects on the essential role children of foster carers play in creating a welcoming environment, highlighting how fostering affects the entire family.
