We’re excited to announce that Sefton Council has been awarded Fostering Friendly accreditation by national charity The Fostering Network. This recognition reflects our commitment to supporting employees who foster and those interested in becoming foster carers.

Foster carers play a vital role in providing safe, stable and loving homes to Sefton’s most vulnerable children and young people. Many carers also juggle fostering alongside other employment with around 40% of foster carers combing fostering with work. A supportive workplace can make all the difference.  There is currently a shortage of foster carers in Sefton, and an urgent need to recruit more. Support from local employers could make all the difference that’s why Sefton is inviting local organisations of all sizes to become fostering friendly and play a part in supporting foster carers within their workforce.

What does it mean to become fostering friendly?

Fostering Friendly is a programme to encourage employers to support fostering, and in particular, foster carers.

This support may include:

  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Additional leave for fostering related commitments
  • Raising awareness of fostering within the workplace

The scheme is part of a national programme led by The Fostering Network, helping employers develop supportive and flexible policies that recognise the vital role foster carers play.

By becoming a Fostering Friendly Employer, your organisation can help by promoting fostering and committing to practical support for employees who foster, or who are considering fostering.

The scheme is free, simple, and open to organisations of any size. There are no complex processes involved, employers simply agree to adopt a fostering friendly HR policy, Which may include:

  • Flexible working to help carers manage their responsibilities
