Foundations for Therapeutic Parenting is a six-week programme to help parents and carers to nurture attachments with their child. Kim Golding designed the group work specifically for those caring for children whose capacity to emotionally connect has been compromised due to attachment problems, trauma, and loss or separation. Informed by attachment theory and Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), it consists of three modules:

1 Understanding the challenges of parenting a child impacted by trauma

  • What blocks trust and openness to shared experiences in relationships
  • Why do children impacted by trauma, miscue, sending off confusing signals?
  • The challenges of parenting children living in shame

2 Therapeutic Parenting
Building connections

  • Noticing – are our children and are we open and engaged?
  • How we can maintain an attitude of Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity & Empathy (PACE)

Supporting behaviour

  • Why traditional behaviour management methods need adapting for children impacted by trauma
  • What is ‘Connection with correction’?
  • How can emotional regulation using PACE and Mind minded parenting be combined to promote positive behaviour?

3 Looking after self

Understanding attachment  history

  • Reflecting on the importance and relevance of early relationship experience when parenting children
  • Exploring the importance of maintaining resilience as a parent
  • Reflect on blocked care and the possible impact for you.
